Staples' Wynne Wins 2 Events at State Open

WESTPORT, Conn. – Monday’s State Open track and field championships were a meet to remember for Staples’ junior Henry Wynne.

He won the 800 and 1,600 for the Wreckers, leading them to a second-place finish with 46.5 points. Windsor won the team crown with 67. Senior pole vaulter Lexie Schachne finished tied for second to lead the Staples' girls team.

Wynne had the biggest day, taking the 800 in 1:54.08 and the 1,600 in 4:12.73. Wyne's top time in the 1,600 is 4:10.35, which is ranked 31st in the country.

He was far from the only highlight, however, for the boys.

The 4 x 400 relay team took second, while Dean Hefnawy (pole vault) and Max Hoberman (triple jump) were third in field events. Staples was seventh in the 4 x 800 relay, and Ethan Bradeen took fifth in the high jump.

Schachne cleared 11 feet to take second in the pole vault. The unseasonably cool temperatures made things difficult for all the athletes, but especially the jumpers as they tried to cope with wind and rain.

The top relay for the girls was the 4 x 400 team, which finished fourth in 4:05.49. Complete results are available online.
