A team of Staples High School boys won the 4x400-meter relay Tuesday at the Hillhouse Winter Relays at the New Haven Track and Field Center.
The Westport team of Max Hoberman, Walker Marsh, Jack Roche and Raphael Ray won in 3:36:41, just over 6 seconds faster than runner-up Hamden High.
Zach Mitchell, Hoberman, George Birch and Ray also took second in the 4x200-meter relay in 1:38.48. Windsor High won the race in 1:36.75. The 4x800-meter team of Marsh, Wynne, Jeff Caffery and Roche ran 8:41.82 to take second behind Hamden.
Other top performers for Staples included the fourth place long jump relay team of Danny Marriott, Tucker Rizzi and George Birch; the third place high jump relay of Marriot and Ethan Bradeen; and the third place shuttle hurdle squad of Eric Lubin, Todd Lubin and Jeremy Langham.
Staples girls runners competed at the Rhode Island Classic on Wednesday. Kelley Hussey took sixth in the 55-meter dash, and Ingrid Johnson placed sixth in the 800 meters. Two relays took fifth. The 4x200-meter relay included Johnson, Elizabeth Driscoll, Kelly Bohling and Hussey. The 4x400-meter team included Johnson, Emily Hanrahan, Driscoll and Courtney Mullen.
