Staples High's track teams won the championship and set three school records at the New England track and field championships Friday night at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center in Boston.
The 4 x 400 team of Jon Heil, Jack Roche, Sean Gallagher and Raphael Ray won in 3:25.46, defending the title the team won at last year's New England outdoor meet. Ray ran a 50.3 anchor leg. The other splits were Heil, 50.7; Roche, 52.3; and Gallagher, 52.1.
The 4 x 800 relay broke its own school record and finished third. The team of Walker Marsh, Roche, Jeff Caffery and Henry Wynne ran 7:59.49, shattering the mark of 8:05.38 set at the Class LL championships two weeks earlier. Wynne ran an incredible 1:55.7 anchor leg. The other splits were Marsh, 2:00.7; Roche, 2:02.0; and Caffery, 2:01.1. The time is the 22nd best in the nation, according to ESPNrise.com, which tracks high school track and field performances.
Ingrid Johnson broke her school record in the 600, finishing 11th in 1:38.27. It was the fourth time Johnson has set a record in the event. The final school mark to fall was the girls 4 x 400 relay, which includes Turner Block, Courtney Mullen, Emily Hanrahan and Johnson. They clocked in at 4:05.53 and finished 10th. Ray finished up Staples' performances by finishing 13th in the 600 in 1:24.42.
