Staples track and field athletes won two events and set three school records at Saturday's New England Championships in Burlington, Vt.
The boys 4 x 400 relay won its second straight New England title with Sean Gallagher, Jonathan Heil, Raphael Ray and John Roche. Pole vaulter Lexie Schachne also captured New England honors by clearing 11 feet, nine inches.
Staples won the 4 x 400 in 3:19.26 with the same quartet that won last year's race. The Wreckers came into the race as the No. 2 seed. They outran Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference rival Trumbull, which finished second in 3:20:35.
Staples finished third in the 4 x 800 relay in 7:50.55 with Roche, Henry Wynne, Gallagher and Henry Marsh. Marsh and Wynne are sophomores. Wachusett, Mass., won the race in 7:45.81. The 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 teams set school records.
Also for the boys, Ray finished second in the 400 in 48.51, just behind Jalen Young of La Salle in Rhode Island, who ran 47.83.
Schachne soared six inches above her closest competitor to win the pole vault, and was just three inches shy of the girls meet record. "It was an incredibly long day,'' Schachne said. "It was raining in Vermont and the event was delayed for four hours. I am thrilled to have won." Schachne will be competing in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals beginning Thursday in Greensboro, N.C.
Staples also set a school record with its 4 x 800 relay team, which finished sixth in 9:27.4. That relay consisted of Kristen Weiler, Ingrid Johnson, Georgia Kursten and Courtney Mullen.
Staples' 4 x 400 relay of Emily Hanrahan, Johnson, Mullen and Tyler Scanlin finished 15th. Complete results are available online .
