WESTPORT, Conn. Staples boys soccer team came away with a scoreless tie against Fairfield Warde in the Wreckers homecoming game at Loeffler Field. The Wreckers enter an important week of play in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference with a 7-1-3 record.
Staples had several scoring opportunities Saturday, as Joe Greenwald and David Hoffman added spark to the Staples attack in the second half. Max Hoberman and Harry Birch also created some good scoring opportunities.
Unfortunately for the Wreckers, they were not able to put a shot past Warde goalie David Disilvestro (9 saves). James Hickok made eight saves for Staples.
The large Alumni Day crowd included George Scott, the goalkeeper on Staples 1958 team. That was the only team from Staples to lose to the Mustangs, who were then known as Andrew Warde. Staples had been 33-0 against Warde since that long-ago loss.
The Wreckers are tied for fourth in the FCIAC standings in the race for playoff seedings. Staples faces three critical games this week, including contests against Fairfield Ludlowe on Monday, Westhill on Wednesday and New Canaan on Friday. The Rams are also 7-1-3 in the league.
