Staples boys and girls track teams split in a three-team race against Danbury and Bassick earlier this week. The boys beat Bassick, 144-6, and the girls beat Bassick, 138-6. But against Danbury, the Hatters won the boys meet, 82-68, and the Staples girls lost, 107.5-37.5
In the girls meet, Lexie Schachne cleared 11 feet, 6 inches to set a school record in the pole vault. She also placed second in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches.
Other highlights included Ingrid Johnsons win in the 800 in 2:22.23 and Georgia Kurstens 1,600 win in 5:33.28.
Emily Hanrahan ran a season best 2:26.53 to take fourth in the 800. Kristen Weiler was fifth with a season best 2:26.98. Courtney Mullen took second in the 400 in 1:01.8, and the 4 x 400 relay team of Johnson, Tyler Scanlin, Hanrahan and Mullen ran 4:08.73. The seasons best time was good enough for second.
Staples (4-1) will compete in the OGrady Relays on Saturday at Danbury. Johnson will also receive a scholar athlete award from the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference at an awards dinner Sunday.
