Staples Tops St. Joseph In First Football Game Under The Lights

WESTPORT, Conn. — Staples High School topped St. Joseph of Trumbull, 49-28, on Friday night in the Wreckers' first game under its new permanent lights. Westport is now 1-0 after winning its season opener.

Senior Captain Joey Zelkowitz scored the first and only touchdown for the Wreckers in the first half, but St. Joseph came right back to tie the game at 7-7 going into halftime.

The Wreckers came to life in the second half, exploding for 42 points.

Senior Captain James Frusciante led the way for the Wreckers, returning a punt for  70 yards and catching touchdown passes of 14 and 62 yards from junior quarterback Jack Massie.

Other highlights included junior Patrick Lesch’s 39- and 30-yard touchdown runs. Sophomore Teddy Coogan rambled for a 41-yard touchdown — the last touchdown for the Wreckers — with two minutes on the clock.

St. Joseph scored its final touchdown with eight seconds left in the game, bringing the final score to 49-28.

The Wreckers will host Bridgeport Central High School at 7 p.m. next Friday.
