The state semifinals were played Tuesday at Yale University in New Haven. In singles, No. 1 seed Danny Hirschberg of Staples defeated No. 4 Reid Risinger of Glastonbury, 6-2, 6-1. Hirschberg will face No. 2 seed Tyler Kratky of Greenwich in the finals.
In doubles, No. 2 seeds Jake Hirschberg and Graham Hyman of Staples defeated No. 3 Daniel Grove and Tyler Hajjar of Cheshire, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4). The Staples team will face No. 1 seeds John Petrini and Brendan Pomerance of Westhill in the finals.
The games will be played at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Yale.
In the team race, Greenwich has 23 points. Staples has 22, and an additional point possible as a result of Westhill default still pending a decision from the CIAC.
If Staples wins the singles match, it is guaranteed a share of the team title. If Staples wins both the singles and doubles match, it wins state title outright.Staples last won the Class LL state title in 1988 and the Class L state title in 2008.
