Staples baseball swings into Class LL tournament action Tuesday just 72 hours after winning the FCIAC championship. The Wreckers host Manchester at 3:30 p.m. Staples softball team also begins Class LL competition Tuesday, while the girls and boys track teams compete in the Class LL outdoor championships at New Britain's Willowbrook Park.
Staples won the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship Saturday with a 5-3 victory over Danbury behind pitcher Rob Gau. The Wreckers are the No. 9 seed for the Class LL tournament. If Staples wins Tuesday, it could face a rematch against No. 8 Danbury on Wednesday. The eighth-seeded Hatters face No. 25 Shelton on Tuesday.
Staples softball has something to prove against Fairfield Ludlowe in a first-round Class LL game. The Falcons earned the eighth seed for the FCIAC tournament and reached the league title game before losing to Darien. The Wreckers and the Falcons finished with identical 10-8 league records, but Ludlowe earned the playoff spot on a tiebreaker. The Wreckers are seeded 18th, the Falcons 15th. Game time is 4 p.m. at Ludlowe. The Falcons beat the Wreckers, 7-4, during the regular season.
Staples athletes to watch at the track meet include senior Raphael Ray, who is the top seed in the 400, and sophomore Henry Wynne, the fourth seed in the 800 and the seventh seed in the 1,600. Lexie Schachne is seeded second in the pole vault and high jump, and Ingrid Johnson is third in the 400. Staples' girls 4 x 800 relay is seeded second, and its boys 4 x 400 team is the defending New England champion. That relay enters the race as the No. 2 seed.
