WESTPORT, Conn. Westhills Dave Quito scored 36 seconds into the game and the Vikings went on to beat Staples, 3-0, in Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference game Wednesday in Stamford. The Wreckers fell to 8-2-3.
Westhill (7-5-2) has a deceiving record, in that three of the losses were forfeits for using an ineligible player. Needing every victory it can to secure a league playoff berth, the Vikings have gone 7-0-2 since the forfeits to announce themselves as potential title contenders.
Thursdays victory against the Wreckers did little to dispel that. Mateo Gallego scored in the ninth minute and Quinto added a second goal in the 56th minute.
After a slow start, Staples pressed in the second half with Dylan Evans, Alex Tonsberg and Max Hoberman making offensive forays that were denied by the Vikings. Quintos last goal delivered the final dagger for Westhill.
The three Viking goals were the most allowed this season by Staples, which is 2-2-2 in its last six games. The Wreckers are currently seeded fourth in the race for the league playoffs and face a key game Friday at New Canaan, which is currently seeded fifth.
Westhill is fighting for a playoff spot and boy, did they fight hard, said Staples head coach Dan Woog. Theyre excellent on the ball, quick, smart and strong. It would be a real shame if they dont get a chance to play in the post-season.
