Staples' boys soccer team scored two goals within 35 seconds in the first half and went on to a 3-0 victory over West Haven in the first round of the Class LL tournament . The fifth-seeded Wreckers (17-2-1) play No. 12 Guilford Thursday at 2 p.m. in a second-round contest.
Greg Gudis scored Staples' first goal in the 15th minute after Jake Krosse unleashed a long free kick. Gudis settled and fired a shot directly over the West Haven keeper. Mikey Scott's throw-in was headed into the West Haven net for an own goal 35 seconds later. Another Scott throw-in was headed in by Steve Denowitz later in the half.
West Haven, seeded 28th, tried to mount a comeback in the second half. A.J. Green, Alex Tonsberg, Taylor McNair, Steve Smith, Dylan Hoy, Felipe Troncoso, Lars Aanestad, Will Meinke, Dylan Evans, Harry Birch and Ryan Armour all contributed to keeping the Westies out of the Staples' goal. Terence Gibbons also played well in his varsity debut.
Staples is 14-0-1 in its last 15 games. The Wreckers won their third straight league title last week with a victory over Fairfield Warde in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship game.
"It's always nice to get the first tournament game under our belt -- anything can happen, and often does,'' Staples coach Dan Woog said. "Guilford is the real deal. They'll provide a great test -- and our guys know it."
