Staples Sparkles at O'Grady Relays

Girls from Staples High School set a school record in the distance medley and the boys won the team championship Saturday at the O'Grady Relays at Danbury High School.

The team of Ingrid Johnson, Courtney Mullen, Emily Hanrahan and Georgia Kursten ran 12:56.9 for the new mark. Despite the school mark, Staples finished second to Darien, which ran 12:36.34.

Staples girls also took third in the 4 x 100 relay and fourth in the 4 x 400 relay. Lexie Schachne cleared 11 feet, 0 inches to tie for first place in the pole vault with Elizabeth Crafford of Darien.

The boys edged Danbury, 68.33-63.50, to win the team championship. The Wreckers won the sprint medley, was second in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200, scored third in the 4 x 800 and 4 x 400, and placed fourth in the distance medley.

Dean Hefnawy finished tied with two other jumper in the pole vault for first place with a leap of 12 feet, 0 inches. Staples won the event, with Alex Lochoff and Aiden McConnell also contributing. Staples also took second in the high jump with Colon Davis (5 feet, 6 inches), Ethan Bradeeh and Kyle Smith.
