WESTPORT, Conn. – The Staples softball team won the championship in a fall softball league for high school teams.
Staples beat Fairfield Ludlowe, 9-8, in extra innings in the semifinals. In the championship, Staples defeated Fairfield Warde, 15-1.
Against Ludlowe, freshman Gabrielle Perry stole home to score the game-winning run. Pitcher Katie Burke also made several fine defensive plays, while Nikki Bukovsky powered the offense. Shannon Connors and Maya Mandell also contributed offensively as Staples battled back three times during the game.
Against Warde, freshman pitcher Emily Lustbader got the win while Chrissy McCarthy slugged a home run. Maggie Mills, Emma Moscovitz, Morgan Didonato and Katherine Friend also supported the offense along with Bukovsky, Connors and Mandell. Warde advanced to the championship game by taking out top-seeded Bethel.
Staples was coached by former Wrecker Dana Levy.
