WESTPORT, Conn. The Staples boys soccer team was awarded the Southwest District Officials Sportsmanship Award for 2011.
This is a huge honor, Staples coach Dan Woog said. Some people think sportsmanship awards are given as consolation prizes to winless teams. This shows that teams can play hard and well and fair and honor the game. I am very proud that the officials have recognized Staples this year.
Referee Joe DAscania, president of the organization, made the announcement over the weekend. The officials group serves most of Fairfield County, including the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.
Staples lost to Trumbull, 2-0, in last weeks league championship game.
The award is based on the commitment to fair play by players and coaches. Staples was assessed just five cards during the season. Co-captains Jake Malowitz and James Hickok and Woog will receive the award at a ceremony Thursday.
