Staples senior Danny Hirschberg wrapped up a spectacular season in style Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Foran's Bradley Orban in the finals of the State Open tennis tournament at Hamden High School.
Hirschberg, who will play next year at Brown University, became the first Staples player since Alex Jacobs in 2001 to win the State Open title. Hirschberg rolled through the Open without dropping a set in defeating Darien's Gavin McNulty, Avon's Sam Flaxman and Daniel Hand's Scott Rubinstein en route to the championship.
Hirschberg also won the Class LL singles title in leading the Wreckers to the team title. Hirschberg won the 2010 Class LL championship and finished undefeated during the regular season and in postseason competition over the past two high school seasons.
