Staples senior Daniel Hirschberg advanced to the semifinals of the State Open tennis tournament Sunday with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sam Flaxman of Avon.
Hirschbeg meets Scott Rubinstein of Daniel Hand in the semifinals Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Hamden Hall High School. Hirschberg has won his first two rounds in the tournament without dropping a set as he looks to become Staples' first winner of the Open since Alex Jacobs in 2001.
Staples' doubles team of Evan Davis and Baxter Stein lost in Sunday's semifinals, dropping a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Daniel Adajian and Reid Andren of Fairfield Ludlowe. Davis and Stein won their first-round match, 6-4, 6-3, over Saagar Sinha and Jason Sittambalam of Avon.
The finals will be played Tuesday at Hamden High School.
