WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples senior Henry Wynne and freshman Hannah DeBalsi ended up at the same spot on the podium Saturday at the Wickham Invitational. Both cross country runners won their respective races at one of the state’s most prestigious invitationals.

Wynne won the championship division of the boys race in 16:22, holding off Trevor Crawley of Cumberland, R.I. by one second. Ohn Hansell of New Milford was third in 16:47.

In the girls seeded race, Debalsi won in 19:43. She finished 16 seconds ahead of Rachael Rosow of Avon.

Staples’ boys finished sixth in the team scoring. Oliver Hickson, Patrick Nolan, Peter Elkind, Sam Cohen, Brad Payne and Marcus Russi ran for the Wreckers.

Staples’ girls finished 11th. Eric Hefnawy, Angelee Parmer, Katherine Smith and Kellen Smithson also ran for the Staples girls.

The meet features some of the top teams from the state. The meet is also run on the same course as the upcoming state championships.

Wynne, a senior, committed last week to run at the University of Virginia. He will defend his title in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference league championship meet on Oct. 18 at Waveny Park in New Canaan.
