FAIRFIELD, Conn. The cross country regular season came to a close under misty conditions Thursday at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. Two days after most of the schools had finished up, the Staples High boys tuned up for next week's Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship with a run that was almost more of a workout or dress rehearsal than an all-out competition.
With the outcome against Harding, Stamford, Bridgeport Central and host Ludlowe a foregone conclusion, the Wreckers throttled back on their efforts. But Henry Wynne still left everyone else in his dust, covering the 3-mile course in 15:30. His closest pursuer was teammate Mikolaj Kulis, who was 1:18 behind. Ludlowe's Jack White finished seven seconds later, and then Staples runners took the next four places to fashion an 18-41 win. Staples beat the other three teams by perfect 15-50 scores.
"Henry ran a nice, controlled race," said Staples coach Laddie Lawrence. "Now we need to get ready for the championship races coming up."
In the girls race, the score was closer, 20-38, but Staples runner Caroline Koenig was first across the line in 19:11. Koenig pulled away from Ludlowe's Heather Moriarty, the defending league champ, in the middle of the race to win by 23 seconds.
