Staples Runners Medal at Black Relays

Staples girls finished second and the boys finished third in the 4x800 relay at the Irv Black Relays at Willowbrook Park. Races, held Thursday and Saturday, featured some of the top teams from Connecticut.

The girls 4x800 relay was made up of Ingrid Johnson, Georgia Kursten, Kristen Weiler and Emily Hanrahan. The Wreckers clocked in at 10:01.08. Windsor won the race in 9:45.46.

The boys' team was made up of Sean Gallagher, Kyle Hoberman, Jack Roche and Henry Wynne. They ran 8:24.66. E.O. Smith won in 8:14.97, followed by Bristol Central. Staples also won the junior varsity boys 4x800.

Wynne, a sophomore, returned Saturday to take third in the 1,600. He ran 4:21.95 against a strong field that also included Fairfield Prep's Connor Rog, who finished fifth in 4:22.64. Rog won the Class LL indoor 1,600-meter state championship earlier this year.

Other highlights for Staples included a fourth place finish by Caroline Koenig in the girls junior varsity mile; an eighth place in the boys javelin by Aidan McConnell; a fifth place in the 400 by Raphael Ray; a sixth in the 3,200 for Ben Aldrich; Courtney Mullen's 12th place finish in the 400; Kursten's 10th place finish in the 800; and Emily Troelstra's eighth place finish in the 400 hurdles.
