Staples Runners Have Record-Setting Weekend

WESTPORT, Conn. – The Staples’ boys track team put the finishing touches on a spectacular winter season this past weekend with two school records and All-American honors in the sprint medley at the New Balance Indoor Nationals meet at the Armory in New York City.

The sprint medley relay team finished sixth and set a school record of 3:29.4. The foursome of Zach Mitchell, Max Hoberman, Jon Heil and Henry Wynne earned All-American honors with their achievement, which came in a race Saturday.

Wynne added another school record in the 800, finishing 10th in 1:53.71.

Two other Staples relays competed in the Elite fields of the meet. The boys 4 x 400 relay, which won its third straight New England championship, ran 3.26.4 and finished 18th. Hoberman, Walker Marsh, Mitchell and Heil comprised the relay. The 4 x 200 team of David Hoffman, Hoberman, Marsh and Mitchell ran 1:33.12 and finished 31st.

Lexie Schachne competed for Staples’ girls in the pole vault. Staples also had a host of athletes in the Emerging Elite events, and were led by Caroline Koenig’s 12th place finish in the two-mile and Dean Hefnawy’s 14th place in the high jump.

Wynne, a junior, took down a record in the 800 by Remi Ray that had stood since 2006. Wynne also set the school record in the 1,000 this winter, and was a member of three relays that also set school records.
