Staples High School's boys track team finished 16th in the 4 x 400 relay Sunday to cap a weekend of strong performances at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at The Armory in New York.
Staples ran 3:24.95 with Jon Heil, Jack Roche, Sean Gallagher and Raphael Ray. A team from DeMatha Catholic in Maryland won the event in 3:15.23. Staples posted the best time by a Connecticut school.
The Wreckers also ran two relays Saturday. The 4 x 200 team of Heil, Zach Mitchell, Gallagher and Ray ran 1:32.96, just 0.01 off its best time of the season. Staples finished 32nd in the preliminaries. Only the top six advanced to Sunday's championship heat.
The 4 x 800 team of Walker Marsh, Ray, Jeff Caffery and Henry Wynne ran 8:02.46 and finished 20th. Abington, Pa., won the race in 7:45.21.
Staples girls ran Friday in the "Emerging Elite" competitions and were led by Lexie Schachne's second-place finish in the pole vault and the 4 x 400 relay team, which finished eighth with a school record of time of 4:03.46. Turner Block, Courtney Mullen, Elizabeth Driscoll and Ingrid Johnson ran on that relay. Block also set a school record in 200, running 26.82.
