WESTPORT, Conn. Staples senior Lexie Schachne finished second Tuesday at the Eastern State Championships in the pole vault.
The meet was held at The Armory in New York, and included 16 girls from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Schachne cleared 11-feet, 6-inches, to earn a three-way tie for second. Chelsea Vaughan of Southern Regional in Manahawkin, N.J., won the event with a leap of 12-feet, 0-inches.
Schachne was one of the only Connecticut athletes competing at the Eastern States. Most of the top athletes will compete Friday at the New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The New England championships do not include a girls pole vault competition. Earlier this winter, Schachne also won the Class LL and State Open championships.
Schachne is also raising money for the Joplin, Mo. High School track and field team. The town was hit by a tornado last May, wiping out 8,000 houses and 450 businesses and killing 159 people. Schachne is hoping to donate proceeds to the school on the one-year anniversary of the tornado in May. Schachne has created her own website, jumpingforjoplin.org , for people interested in supporting her cause.
