Staples Meets Wilton In Football

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- After losing four straight games to Greenwich between 2004-07, the Blue Wave football team has won the last three meetings against the Cardinals. Saturday’s showdown figures to be one of the most important ones of the season for both teams.

The teams kickoff at 4 p.m. Saturday at Cardinal Stadium in Greenwich. The Blue Wave and Cardinals got off on the right foot last weekend with wins over Stamford and Trinity Catholic, respectively.

Both teams have postseason aspirations, and an early-season loss would leave both teams with little margin for error the rest of the way. Darien and Greenwich play in Class LL, and only eight teams qualify in each of the four divisions for the state playoffs.

Darien blew out Stamford, 47-14, behind quarterback Tim Graham, who completed 18-of-20 passes for 268 yards and four touchdowns. Darien led 47-0 at halftime.

The Cardinals outscored Trinity Catholic, 42-38. Quarterback Frank Alfano threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Luke Bienstock rushed for 102 yards and two TDs.

John Marinelli is in his first season at Greenwich, which lost last year to Darien by a 33-26 score.

Other games this weekend in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference are: Friday, Stamford at Fairfield Warde, 7 p.m.; Westhill at Trumbull, 7 p.m.; Trinity Catholic at Norwalk, 7 p.m.; Ridgefield at Fairfield Ludlowe, 7 p.m.; St. Joseph at Brien McMahon, 7 p.m.; Staples at Wilton, 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Bridgeport Central at New Canaan, 1:30 p.m.

In the South-West Conference, Weston travels to New Fairfield and Joel Barlow hosts Masuk. Both games kick off at 7 p.m. on Friday. Stratford visits Notre Dame of Fairfield for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday.

Darien is ranked No. 2 in the state in the latest MaxPreps’ rankings, and New Canaan is No. 4. Greenwich (No. 13) and McMahon (No. 19) are also among the top 20.
