Lawrence will receive the award along with former New Canaan and University of New Haven basketball star Gary Liberatore, former basketball star Mike Gminski, E.O. Smith boys soccer coach John Blomstrand and University of Connecticut field hockey coach Nancy Stevens.

State athletes and coaches have received the Gold Key since 1940, and it is regarded as one of the most prestigious honors in Connecticut.

Lawrence has coached cross country, indoor track and outdoor track at Staples since 1969. After starting as an assistant to Paul Lane, he became the head coach of the indoor team in 1970, and gradually took over all three programs. He has been the head coach for all three teams for the last 36 years.

Last spring, Staples’ outdoor team finished 11-0 for Lawrence’s 29th Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship. Staples won the Class LL state championship, the 35th time his teams have won a state banner. After this fall’s cross country season, Lawrence has amassed 1,659 wins during his career.

Tickets to the 2013 Gold Key Dinner, which will be at 4 p.m. on April 28, can be purchased by contacting either CSWA President George Albano of The (Norwalk) Hour at 203-434-2320 or dinner chairman and CSWA Vice President Bob Ehalt of The New Haven Register at Ehalt.Bob@sbcglobal.net.
