Staples High School girls' lacrosse team cruised to the Division II finals with a 19-8 win over the St. Bernard Saints at Bunnell High School in Stratford. Blair Barone had five goals and Nicole Seo netted four with three assists as the Wreckers kept up a relentless attack throughout the game, despite steady rain.
Staples battled injuries all season and did not play with a full roster until the postseason. Barone felt vindicated by her performance after missing the first half of the season with an ankle sprain.
"I missed a lot of time," Barone said. "But every game I get stronger. It's so nice to be in states and make it this far and be at the top of my game now."
Staples went into the locker room at halftime with a comfortable 10-3 lead and continued its dominance the rest of the way. Five Wreckers had multiple goals. The Saints never got closer than seven goals behind in the second half.
I hoped we would make it farther than we did last year, Staples head coach Cathy Schager said. Getting knocked out last year was a good learning experience for us. Six years ago did I think we would get this far? No. But we hoped it and we dreamt it.
Staples will go for the Division II state championship this Saturday against the Fairfield Ludlowe Falcons, who defeated them twice during the regular season. With a full and healthy team though, the players know it will be an even matchup.
"We just have to realize that it's like any other game," Seo said. "We know how to play. Nothing's changed and we need to trust each other."
