Danny Hirschberg won the Class LL individual championship as the Wreckers won the team title Thursday at Yale University.
No. 1 seed Hirschberg captured the singles title with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 2 Tyler Kratky of Greenwich. Hirschberg, a Westport resident who will attend Brown University, did not drop a set in the march to his second straight Class LL title. Hirschberg opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Newtown's Ricky Fuentes. He then beat Conard's Alex Sloan, Brien McMahon's Thomas Luchars, Hall's Jeremy Shuskus and Glastonbury's Reid Risinger.
Hirschberg is ranked 87th in the nation and No. 3 in New England, according to www.tennisrecruiting.net . He joins former Wrecker Alex Jacobs as a two-time winner of the Class LL tournament.
The Staples High School doubles team of Jake Hirschberg and Graham Hyman finished as the runner-ups in the doubles tournament. They dropped a 7-5, 6-0 decision to Westhill's top-seeded tandem of John Petrini and Brendan Pomerance. Staples was seeded second.
Staples last won the Class LL championship in 1988. Since then, it has won nine Class L titles, the last in 2008. The Wreckers ended a six-year run by Greenwich. The Wreckers finished with 24 points, followed by Greenwich with 23.
Staples is coached by Kris Hrisovulos, a former star for the Wreckers. He is the junior coordinator at the Stamford Indoor Tennis club.
