Staples High School Fall Sports Kick Off Tuesday

WESTPORT, Conn. – Scrimmages are over and the fall sports season begins for real, as Staples High School athletic teams play their first games on Tuesday. Other opening games continue throughout the week.

Below is the schedule of season openers for fall sports teams at Staples High .

Tuesday

The boys and girls cross country teams host their opening meets of the season at 4 p.m. The Wreckers host Wilton, Trinity Catholic and Bassick in a multi-team meet.

Wednesday

The defending conference champion field hockey team opens its season at home, taking on Ridgefield at 4 p.m. Staples went 8-3-3-1 en route to capturing its first conference field hockey title since 1994.

The Staples girls soccer team begins its season at home as well, hosting Stamford at 4 p.m. The Wreckers went 8-5-3 in the regular season and missed the conference playoffs but went on a Cinderella run to the Class LL state semifinals.

The girls volleyball team also opens at home, hosting New Canaan at 4 p.m. in the Staples gymnasium. Staples went an impressive 16-2 last year, reaching the conference semifinals and the Class LL state quarterfinals.

The girls swimming and diving team opens on the road at Ridgefield for a 4 p.m. meet.

Thursday

The boys soccer team kicks off on Thursday at Ridgefield for a 4 p.m. game. The Wreckers went 10-2-4 in the regular season and were conference runners-up to Trumbull.

Friday

The Staples High football team opens its season at home against St. Joseph under the brand new lights at Wreckers Stadium. For the first time ever at Staples High, gametime will be at 7 p.m.
