Staples Headlines Football 'Game of the Week'

WESTPORT, Conn. - The wait is finally over for Staples High School football fans. A frustrating 2010 season full of "almost" and "so close" gives way to a new slate of hope for the Wreckers' first state championship since 2005.

In Main Street Connect's new video segment, "FCIAC Football Fast Five," Staples' opening game Saturday against defending Class S state champion St. Joseph was chosen as “game of the week.” The Wreckers allowed just under an average of 11 points a game last year and will need to put up similar numbers to repeat last season’s success, when Staples finished with a 9-2 record. St. Joseph's offense averaged nearly 36 points a game last season.

There are plenty of new faces on both sides of the field. The Wreckers graduated 25 seniors and are starting a sophomore quarterback, but in The Daily Westport's season preview for Staples football, head coach Marce Petroccio think his defense will rise to the occasion again.

Watch the next episode of FCIAC Fast Five on Sept. 22 for a recap of Saturday's game and a preview of the next Main Street Connect game of the week.
