WESTPORT, Conn. - The wait is finally over for Staples High School football fans. A frustrating 2010 season full of "almost" and "so close" gives way to a new slate of hope for the Wreckers' first state championship since 2005.
In Main Street Connect's new video segment, " FCIAC Football Fast Five ," Staples' opening game Saturday against defending Class S state champion St. Joseph was chosen as game of the week. The Wreckers allowed just under an average of 11 points a game last year and will need to put up similar numbers to repeat last seasons success, when Staples finished with a 9-2 record. St. Joseph's offense averaged nearly 36 points a game last season.
There are plenty of new faces on both sides of the field. The Wreckers graduated 25 seniors and are starting a sophomore quarterback, but in The Daily Westport's season preview for Staples football , head coach Marce Petroccio think his defense will rise to the occasion again.
Watch the next episode of FCIAC Fast Five on Sept. 22 for a recap of Saturday's game and a preview of the next Main Street Connect game of the week.
