FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Staples goalie James Hickok was among eight boys soccer players from local high schools named to the Connecticut Soccer Coaches Association all-state team.
Hickok was one of three goalies names to the Class LL team. Other players from lower Fairfield County communities on the Class LL team include Westhill's Matteo Gallego, Norwalk's Nick Zuniga, Fairfield Prep's Will Steiner and Greenwich's Pieter Zenner. New Canaan's Scott Levene and Jon Luke Ferrandino were named to the Class L all-state team along with Wilton's Dillon Weed.
Hickok had 12 shutouts in 21 games and allowed just 13 goals. Staples has had all-state selections for four straight years. He is the first Staples goalie since Alex Deegan in 1990 to earn the award.
Im very glad for James, head coach Dan Woog said. Hes worked tremendously hard on all aspects of his game from dominating the box to distribution, to communication. Hes got a fantastic mentor in our keeper coach, Tom Henske, and this honor is really a tribute to both of them.
The all-state selections were based, in part, on coaches rankings of players on all-league teams. They will be honored at a dinner Jan. 29 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.
