WESTPORT, Conn. In a contest Friday of two evenly matched girls volleyball teams, Staples High fell to Greenwich High after five grueling and thrilling games, 3-2.
The scores were 25-23, 14-25, 25-23, 23-25 and 11-15.
The undefeated teams fought toe-to-toe in a potential preview of a postseason showdown. The lead changed hands at least five times in the first, third and fourth games and changed three times in the final game.
That was a really good match, Staples head coach Jon Sherpo said. We lost a lot of girls to graduation, and so this was a good test game for us.
High-flying Amelia Brackett led Staples with 16 kills and five aces, while Jen Dimitrief added eight kills and two aces. Frankie Lynch anchored the Staples defense with six digs and 41 assists.
Greenwich was blowing out Staples in the second game, 15-3, but the Wreckers gained momentum going into the third game. Staples erased a 17-9 Greenwich lead in the third game to pull ahead but could not finish off the Cardinals.
Staples had a 21-20 lead in game four, but Greenwich finished the game on a 5-3 run to force the deciding game five. The lead changed hands three times early on, but Greenwich pulled away to grab the victory.
This was a five-gamer and we now know we can play with the best teams in the conference now, Sherpo said. Thats what well take going forward.
Staples will have five days to prepare for its next match. The Wreckers host Westhill next Thursday at 4 p.m.
