WESTPORT, Conn. Staples High's girls track team won the opening 4 x 100 relay and the meet-ending 4 x 400 relay. The Wreckers did a lot of good things in between, too, to win their first Fairfield County Interscholastic Conference division championship since 2003.
Staples defeated Danbury, 85-60, and Ridgefield, 89-56, to sweep the tri-meet Monday afternoon. The victory raises Staples record to 7-0. Staples captured the Central Division title with the sweep. The Wreckers have two league meets left, but none of the teams left on its schedule are division opponents.
We knew it was going to be a close meet, head coach Jesse McCray said. It couldve gone either way.
Staples served notice in the first event that it came into the meet prepared. It won the 4 x 100 relay, and the meet was on. Emily Troelstra won the 100 hurdles, and Staples went one-two in the 100 with Amanda Giannitti and Caitlin Hartmann. Tyler Scanlin won the 400, Alex Popkin won the 800 and the Wreckers closed it out with a solid win in the 4 x 400 relay.
Staples also added in a few victories in the field events (official results were not available) to take down two of the premier teams in the conference. The meet came during Coaches vs. Cancer, in which many Staples girls wore pink shirts to show their support for the fight against cancer.
We had some great performances, McCray said. We expected to do well in the distance races. We got some big points in the sprints, and that took some pressure off of distance runners. We knew if we were going to win we had to have things go perfectly for us. In large part, they did.
