Staples Girls Track Team Runs to Beat Cancer

WESTPORT, Conn. — The Staples High School girls track team is joining forces with the American Cancer Society to host a Coaches vs. Cancer event on Monday, April 30, at the Staples.

Through head coach Jesse McCray’s work with the Coaches vs. Cancer program, the girls track team has chosen this meet to host a “Light Up the Track” event to benefit the American Cancer Society. Team members will sell luminaria bags in honor or memory of those who have battled cancer. The bags will be displayed at the meet and a brief ceremony will be held prior to the events start. Luminaria bags will also be available for purchase.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of “Light Up the Track” and the team. Athletes are also collecting pledges for the number of events they compete in at the meet. The meet begins at 4 p.m. The luminara ceremony begins at 3:30.

Proceeds from luminaria sales and pledges will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Ridgefield and Danbury have also been invited to participate in the event.

For more information regarding the event or how to get involved, contact Coach Jesse McCray at Staples High School at 203-341-1488 or Kelly Stewart, Coaches vs. Cancer Youth Coordinator for the American Cancer Society, at kelly.stewart@cancer.org or 203-563-1530
