WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples girls track team improved to 9-0 Monday with a sweep of New Canaan and Harding. The Wreckers defeated the Rams, 93-52, and blanked Harding, 142-0.
Staples enters its final meet of the season Monday against Norwalk and Stamford looking to go undefeated in the regular season. The team will be one of the contenders for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship in the league meet on May 22 at Danbury.
Staples competed at the Middletown Invitational on Saturday, and pole vaulter Lexie Schachne came away with a meet record in winning the pole vault. She cleared 12 feet, 0 inches, tying the school record she set last year.
In other highlights for Staples at the Middletown meet for the girls, Alexandra Popkin and Tyler Scanlin went 3-4 in the 800, and Caroline Koenig took seventh in the 3200. Staples was also third in the 4 x 400 relay with Popkin, Courtney Mullen, Emily Troelstra and Scanlin. Emily Knoll took fourth in the high jump.
For the boys, Max Hoberman won the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 6 ½ inches. Dean Hefnawy and Matt Mula went 2-3 in the pole vault, while Tucker Rizzi and Aiden McConnell went 4-5 in the javelin. Staples took second in the 4 x 100 with Jon Heil, Hoberman, David Hoffman and Zach Mitchell. Hoffman was third in the 100,Heil was fourth in the 400, Mitchell fifth in the 200. Mikolaj Kulis took eighth in the 1,600 and Sam Cohen was seventh in the 3,200.
Staples also took seventh in the 4 x 400 relay with Walker Marsh, Giles Bonner, Hefnawy and Henry Wynne. Complete results of the Middletown Invitational are online. Staples boys, also undefeated at 7-0, meet New Canaan and Harding on Tuesday.
