Staples Girls Suffer First Loss

WESTPORT, Conn – Stamford outscored Staples, 18-6, in the final period Friday to defeat the Wreckers, 43-34, in a battle of previously undefeated girls basketball teams.

Staples led 20-17 at halftime and was still up by three, 28-25, entering the final period. But Stamford pulled away down the stretch, paced by 15 points by Kelsey Cognetta and 10 by Kelsey Santagata.

Erica Stein and Jess Coelho scored 12 each for the Wreckers. Coelho added eight rebounds while Remy Nolan had four steals. Staples hosts Trinity Catholic in another key girls game Tuesday in Westport at 7 p.m.
