Staples' girls soccer team is showing staying power in the Class LL tournament. The 11th-seeded Wreckers knocked off No. 6 Nauagutck, 1-0, on Thursday to reach Monday's quarterfinals. Staples will meet the winner of Friday's game on Monday at 2 p.m. at a site to be determined.
Abbey Lake's goal in the 19th minute of the first half gave Staples the victory. The Wreckers won despite missing Shannon Lesch and captain Kelly Bohling, who were sidelined with injuries. Turner Block and Alexandra Weiner stepped up in their place and delivered fine performances.
Lauren Kratky, Shannon Moss, Siri Andrews, Adele Mackey and Ryan Kirshner also played well, while goalie Jessica Ambrose earned her seventh shutout of the season. Staples takes a 13-4-4 record into Monday's contest.
