WESTPORT, Conn. Staples' girls basketball team faces an important week as the Wreckers try to secure one of the eight spots in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament.
The Wreckers (10-6 overall, 9-5 league) travel to face unbeaten Danbury on Tuesday and to Trumbull on Friday. Both games tip off at 7 p.m. Danbury (16-0, 14-0) is the current no. 1 seed in the league, and Trumbull is seeded second (14-2, 12-2).
Staples enters the week tied for the sixth spot with Norwalk and Stamford. Darien, Fairfield Warde and Westhill are one game back. Trinity Catholic (10-5 in the league) is the current No. 5 seed.
Staples has won two straight games after a three-game losing streak. Jess Coelho had a big game in a 53-48 win over Wilton, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. She is the teams leading scorer with 13.9 points per game.
Junior forward Nikki Bukovsky scored a team-high 17 points in Fridays 42-40 win over Westhill. She also had 10 rebounds and four steals. Erica Stein is averaging 12.8 points per game for Staples.
The Wreckers will need to make the league tournament on the road. All four of their remaining games are away from Staples, where the girls are 7-2. Staples finishes the season against Greenwich and Ridgefield, both of whom have sub .500 records.
Even if Staples does not make the league tournament, it has already qualified for the Class LL field. Staples has made the state tournament for 28 straight years, the second-longest streak in state history.
