Staples Football Slams McMahon, 55-14

WESTPORT, Conn. – The Staples High football team did not have to worry about a slow start in Friday night’s game against Brien McMahon of Norwalk after struggling in the first half of its first two games.

The Wreckers came out with guns blazing, dominating McMahon in every facet of the game. Staples quickly built a 28-0 lead after the first quarter en route to a complete rout of the Senators, 55-14.

The last time the two teams met, Staples barely survived, with a dramatic field goal sealing the victory. The Wreckers made sure there was nothing close to drama this time around.

“Tonight was just our night,” Staples head coach Marce Petroccio said. “We have high expectations here and we didn’t do all the things we needed to do the last two games. We’re happy with the way we played tonight.”

Five different Wreckers scored seven touchdowns before the first half was in the books. Staples’ starters sat the entire second half, giving way to the backups.

Joey Zelkowitz kicked off the Staples scoring with a 3-yard run early in the first quarter. Nick Kelly would score touchdowns from one, nine and 17 yards before the half was over.

Patrick Lesch scampered 49 yards as time expired in the first quarter to put Staples up 28-0. Zach Speranza rounded out the scoring in the first half with a 25-yard touchdown run. Staples outgained McMahon on offensive yards, 479-20, in the first half alone.

Tyler Tsang scored the lone touchdown of the second half, putting Staples up 55-0 at the time. McMahon scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter against Staples’ backups.

“It was great to come out with our best effort in the first half and not just the first half,” Kelly said. “The offensive line did a fantastic job tonight. I give all the credit to them.”

Staples played an almost flawless game with no turnovers, no sacks allowed and only two penalties on the evening.

The Wreckers (3-0) have a bye next week. Staples returns to action Oct. 12 at Danbury for a 7 p.m. game.
