With senior quarterback Chet Pajolek out for the season with an injury, Staples turned to freshman Jack Massie and senior Tyler Jacobs to lead the undefeated Wreckers past Wilton, 35-7, on Friday night at Fujitani Field.
Massie threw for one touchdown and ran for another. Jacobs, who also saw time at quarterback in the Wildcat formation, added a touchdown run. Staples is 8-0; Wilton fell to 3-5.
Pajolek sustained an injury in last week's win over Ludlowe. In stepped Massie, who threw a 35-yard touchdown pass and ran for a score. Jacobs and Rob Gau also ran for touchdowns, and Chris Coyne blocked a punt and recovered in the end zone for another Staples score.
Staples is on track for a berth in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship game and a Class LL playoff berth. The Wreckers have two important regular-season games, however, including a contest against Trumbull on Saturday and their annual Thanksgiving showdown against Greenwich.
Clay Helms scored Wilton's touchdown on a pass from Sean Carroll. Wilton travels Friday to play Ridgefield.
