Staples Football Hopes To 'Defy, Wreck, Cure'

WESTPORT, Conn. – The Staples High School varsity football team is going pink Friday to raise funds for woman battling breast cancer during the team’s third annual “Get Your Pink On” breast cancer awareness event and fundraiser.

During this special home game against Trumbull High School, the Wreckers will don pink receiving gloves, said Tammy Zelkowitz, co-chair of the “Get Your Pink On” campaign.

For the past two weeks, team members have been selling pink logo wear— like t-shirts, hats and rally towels—at the high school. These items will also be on sale at the game, Zelkowitz said. This year’s t-shirts and team slogan is “Defy, Wreck, Cure.”

All merchandise sale proceeds will be donated to Pink Aid, a local nonprofit that funds breast cancer support services for local women who are uninsured or under-insured, Zelkowitz said. The Staples cheerleading squad is also donating proceeds from their bake sale revenue, Zelkowitz said.

The nonprofit, which was founded by Andrew Mitchell of Westport, provides free mammograms, wigs, rides to treatments, grocery deliveries and more, according to the official Pink Aid website .

Last year’s "Get Your Pink On" event raised more than $6,000, which the team hopes to exceed, Zelkowitz said. In hopes of creating another “pink out” at the game, all attendees are asked to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.

“As a community, be part of the cause and let’s wreck breast cancer together,” Zelkowitz wrote in an email.

The game begins at 7 p.m. at Staples Stadium, 70 North Ave. For more information, email Tammy Zelkowitz.
