WESTPORT, Conn. — Three points: That is all that stood in the way of Staples achieving an undefeated season. Staples' only loss of the 2010 regular season came in a 15-13 defeat to Trumbull. The Wreckers then lost in the state playoffs to Glastonbury, 7-6.
The Staples football Class of 2010 graduated some impressive and irreplaceable players from the defensive side. The 25 seniors that have moved on led the state in interceptions and were ranked fourth in sacks and sixth in tackles. Now the task is trying to fill the shoes of that hulking defense.
In the video, Staples head coach Marce Petroccio discusses his young defense, the stronger schedule the Wreckers' will face, and the progress of quarterback Jack Massie. As a freshman, Massie was thrust into the starting role after senior Chet Pajolek tore his anterior cruciate ligament against Fairfield Ludlowe on Oct. 30.
Staples will be challenged right away, starting its season with a three-game road trip. The Wreckers will travel to defending Class S state champion St. Joseph in their season opener on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 1:30 p.m. Staples will also take on Bridgeport Central, Brien McMahon, Trumbull and Westhill on the road. The Wreckers' home slate includes games against Danbury, Darien, Fairfield Warde and Greenwich on Thanksgiving Day.
