Breaking News: Black Ice Advisory Issued For Melting Snow Refreezing

Staples Falls to Westhill

Staples was attempting to become the first baseball team in Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conferencee history to win three straight league titles. Westhill had other ideas.

The Vikings erupted for five runs in the sixth inning Monday to defeat the Wreckers, 7-4, in an FCIAC quarterfinal game Monday in Westport. The Wreckers (21-3) will now await the Class LL tournament while the Vikings advance to the league semifinals Tuesday against Fairfield Ludlowe.

Staples led 1-0 after Ryan Burke's sacrifice fly in the third, but Westhill took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Alex Rough's two-run home run. Another sacrifice fly by Burke made it 2-2 entering the sixth. Westhill erupted for five runs in the sixth, stringing together six straight hits. Morgan Williams and Ryan Curto hit two-run singles in the inning to highlight the uprising off Speer.

Danny Carbone cracked a two-run home run in the sixth for Staples. John Porter got the win for Westhill, which lost to Staples in last year's FCIAC championship.
