Staples Falls to NC in Boys Tennis Final

After a perfect regular season and two victories in the first two rounds of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference playoffs, Staples suffered its first loss in Thursday's championship. The Wreckers fell to New Canaan, 4-2.

No. 1 singles player Danny Hirschberg won 6-2, 6-0 at first singles over Ben Lee for Staples (16-1) and Graham Hyman won at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-3 over Steve Evans. New Canaan won three singles matches and first doubles to stop the top-seeded Staples.

"I don't think we played our A-plus game, but we gave a great effort,'' Staples coach Kris Hrisovulos said. "It's a tough loss to swallow, but we played the best we could. Sometimes that happens in sports. We still have a chance (in the Class L state tournament) to end the season as a winner."

Staples defeated New Canaan 5-2 during the regular season, but the Rams turned around some of the matches Thursday. Nick Laub clinched the victoroy for New Canaan with a 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 6-3 win over Jake Hirschberg at No. 4 singles. Hirschberg put up a gallant fight in the final set, overcoming two breaks to get within 5-3 before Laub closed it out. At third doubles, Sam Hickock and Alex Ratner fought from a set down to force a third set, but the match was not completed after the Rams clinched the victory.
