Staples Faces Familiar Foe in State Playoffs

WESTPORT, Conn. - Westport's Staples High School football team isn't done with its conference opponents just yet. After capturing the conference championship in dramatic fashion on Thanksgiving, the Wreckers will now prepare to take on Ridgefield in the first round of the Class LL state tournament .

Second-seeded Staples (9-0) will take on the seventh-ranked Tigers (7-2) at Wilton High School on Nov. 29, at 6:30 p.m. Staples last played Ridgefield in a scrimmage during the preseason. The Wreckers defeated the Tigers last year in the regular season, 34-14.

Staples defeated Greenwich , 31-27, in a thrilling come-from-behind victory on Thanksgiving to win the Fairfield Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship. The victory locked up the two-seed for the Wreckers. It also guaranteed that the semifinals will be played at a neutral site close to Westport if Staples advances.

Staples is trying for its first state championship since 2005. The Wreckers were eliminated in the first round of last year's state tournament by Glastonbury, 7-6.

Other Fairfield County teams that qualified for the playoffs are Norwalk and New Canaan. Fifth-ranked Norwalk will play in its first state playoff game since 1998 at Conard (West Hartford) on Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Class LL tournament. New Canaan, seeded fifth in the Class L playoffs, travels to fourth-ranked New London on Nov. 29 for a 6:30 p.m. game.
