WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples High’s track and field team ended Danbury’s 11-year run atop the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference with a resounding victory in Tuesday’s league championship meet at Danbury.
Led by two wins by junior Henry Wynne, Staples put up 147.5 points to easily outdistance Danbury, which finished with 82.5. According to the league website, it was the Wreckers’ first outdoor league title since 1990. They had finished second to Danbury nine times during the Hatters’ decade-plus-one run.
Staples girls finished fourth with 74.5 points. Darien girls won with 115, followed by Greenwich (90) and Danbury (88.5).
Wynne had one of the most impressive days of any athlete in the 18-team conference. He won the 1,600 in 4:14.3, the best time in the event this year. Wynne held off Fairfield Warde’s Harry Warnick, who ran 4:16.94. The race was an outstanding battle, with Warnick trying desperately to overtake Wynne in the final 300 meters, to no avail. Wynne had it only slighty easier in the 800 in 1:53.23, nipping Fairfield Ludlowe’s Jack White by less than two seconds.
Wynne was Staples’ only individual winner in track events. The 4 x 100 took first with Jon Heil, Max Hoberman, David Hoffman and Zach Mitchell. The 4 x 400 relay, one of the Wreckers’ top units for years, was surprised by Danbury and finished second. The 4 x 800 took fifth.
Staples picked up 22 points in the pole vault, led by Matt Mula’s win. Dean Hefnawy took second, Doug Caffery was fifth and Aiden McConnell was seventh. Max Hoberman added a victory in the triple jump, and McConnell was second in the javelin. Colin Davis was third in the high jump, while Ethan Bradeen (fourth) and Kyle Smith (sixth) also picked up points. Davis jumped 6 feet, the first time this year he has cleared that height.
Emily Troelstra won the 300 hurdles, and Lexie Schachne won the pole vault for the girls. Alex Popkin (800) and Tyler Scanlin (400) both took seconds and ran their best times in those events this year. Troelstra was also third in the 100 hurdles. Staples was third in the 4 x 100 relay, and second in the 4 x 400 relay.
