Led by wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles by brothers Danny and Jake Hirschberg, the Staples High School boys tennis team defeated New Canaan, 4-3, in battle of unbeatens Thursday at New Canaan High School.
Danny, a senior who will play next year at Brown University, defeated Chase Urban, 6-1, 6-2. Jake won the most exciting match of the day, a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Nick Laub at No. 2 singles.
Jesse Heussner won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3. The other Staples victory came at No. 2 doubles, where Steve Thomson and Luke Foreman posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Luke McDermott and Connor Hedley.
Staples lost to New Canaan in last year's FCIAC championship match. Staples concludes its regular season next week with matches Monday against Brien McMahon and Tuesday against Stamford. It opens tournament play Friday. The finals are scheduled for May 26 at Wilton High School.
Staples tied with Fairfield in 2001 for the league championship. Its last outright state championship came in 2000.
