WESTPORT, Conn. The Staples boys tennis team edged Westhill, 4-3, Thursday in Westport in a battle between two of the top teams in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.
Staples improved to 12-1, while Westhill fell to 10-2. Greenwich (11-0) is the only unbeaten team in the conference.
Josh Moskovitz won at No. 3 singles for Staples, and Connor Mitnick prevailed at No. 5 singles. Both Wreckers won in straight sets.
The difference, however, was in doubles. Steve Thomson and Baxter Stein won 6-0, 6-1, while Evan Davis and Jack Reardon won by the same margin.
Staples lost to Greenwich, 5-2. It has won every other match by 7-0 or 6-1 margins, except for a 5-2 win over Ridgefield on May 16.
Staples meets Darien on Friday and wraps up the regular season with matches next week against Trinity Catholic and New Canaan. The Rams also lost to Greenwich, 7-0, and defeated Westhill, 5-2. New Canaan dropped its second match of the season Thursday to Ridgefield, 5-2.
