WESTPORT, Conn. Danbury High scored the game-tying goal in the 75th minute against Staples High, making it 2-2 in a league game at Westport.
Staples (9-2-4) is seeded fourth with one regular season game remaining. It meets Harding on Wednesday and has secured a berth in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament. Danbury (6-2-7) is fighting for a playoff berth.
Staples started strong, and its work was rewarded in the 48th minute when Dylan Hoy and Lorenz Esposito worked a perfect give-and-go. Espositos pass to Hoy resulted in an easy goal and a 1-0 Staples lead. Joe Greenwald converted a pass in the 66th minute from Jay Kaplan to put the Wreckers up 2-0.
The Hatters countered in just 43 seconds. Staples threatened several more times but couldnt convert. Danbury scored when it had a throw-in near the end line, and it sailed through the box and was knocked home from close range.
Im disappointed not in our guys, but for our guys, coach Dan Woog said. For 70 minutes, we played excellent soccer. This is a mental game, as well as a physical one. Well keep working on the mental aspect. Our guys are smart and strong. I am fully confident theyll get it done.
James Hickok had seven saves in goal for Staples.
