Staples Boys Soccer Rips Harding in Finale

WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples’ boys soccer rolled over Harding of Bridgeport 9-0 to finish the regular season with a 10-2-4 record. The Wreckers host Greenwich Friday at 3 p.m. in the first round of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament.

Ten seniors started for the Wreckers. Goalie James Hickok was the only junior. Terence Gibbons scored 2:34 into the game and Max Hoberman scored in the fifth minute. Dylan Hoffman, Dylan Hoy, Noah Bender and Jack Scott added four more first-half tallies. Diego Alanis scored two in the second half and Will Meinke had the final goal.

The seniors who played their final regular season game for Staples included Dylan Evans, Terence Gibbons, Kyle Hoberman, Max Hoberman, Jay Kaplan, Aaron Liu, Jake Malowitz, Taylor McNair, Will Meinke, Ben Root, Steven Smith and Alex Tonsberg. David Hoffman, a junior in his final year of eligibility, was also recognized with the seniors.

Staples now turns its attention to the FCIAC playoffs. The Wreckers have won three straight FCIAC tournaments, last year defeating Fairfield Warde for the championship. The Wreckers enter the tournament as the fourth seed. During the regular season they  beat Greenwich 3-2.

"Staples traditionally has three soccer seasons: the regular season, FCIACs and the state tournament,” coach Dan Woog said. "This year, we didn’t reach all of our goals in the first season. We let our guard down sometimes, and let a few games get away. The second season begins in 48 hours. It’s a chance to prove what we can do — to ourselves, and everyone else. No one ever remembers the regular season. And no one ever forgets the other two.”
