WESTPORT, Conn. The Staples' boys soccer team lost a lot of firepower from last year's Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship team. The new-look Wreckers defeated Ridgefield, 1-0, on Wednesday to improve to 5-0 on the season, and they are doing it with defense. Staples recorded its fourth shutout of the season Wednesday and made Ben Root's goal in the 5th minute stand up to defeat the Tigers. Staples and Trumbull are 5-0 in the FCIAC West Division. New Canaan and Darien are also unbeaten in the conference. Lorenz Esposito assisted on Root's game-winner. Goalie James Hickock, who flourished as a sophomore on last year's team, made three saves. "We'll take it," coach Dan Woog said on Staplessoccer.com . "We have tremendous faith in James and our backs. We defend as a team and attack as a team. We've got no superstars different heroes each game. The guys like each other, they support each other, and the team chemistry is great to see. We're having a good time every day, and that's what it's all about." Staples has a challenging game Friday against Norwalk at 3 p.m. The Bears (4-1) have lost only to Trumbull. The game is scheduled for Loeffler field, but may be moved to Wakeman. Check Staplesoccer.com for information.
