Staples Boys Lacrosse To Hold Charity Game in Westport

WESTPORT, Conn. – The Staples High School boys varsity lacrosse team will be doing more than scoring goals during this Saturday's home game in Westport — they’ll be raising money for wounded U.S. military veterans.

The event will serve as a fundraiser for Sticks for Soldiers , an annual charity lacrosse tournament played in Fairfield since 2006 that raises money for wounded troops, a press release from the team announced. Since its inception, Sticks for Soldiers has raised about $155,000.

Saturday’s event at Staples Stadium will begin at 3:30 p.m. with an introduction by Capt. Rick Holahan, a Connecticut native who served in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Holahan just returned from a voluntary deployment in Afghanistan.

The Wreckers will take on Long Island’s St. John the Baptist beginning at 4 p.m. Halftime activities will include Westport Police Athletic League team play, the press release said.

Tickets for the event are $5 and can be purchased at the game from the Wreckers Lacrosse Club. Hot dogs and chips for $3 a ticket will be served by Junior’s Hot Dog Stand. Baked goods and T-shirts also will be available for purchase.

All money raised from the event will be donated to Sticks For Soldiers and will help provide support for severely injured servicemen.
