WESTPORT, Conn. The Staples High School boys varsity lacrosse team will be doing more than scoring goals during this Saturday's home game in Westport theyll be raising money for wounded U.S. military veterans.
The event will serve as a fundraiser for Sticks for Soldiers , an annual charity lacrosse tournament played in Fairfield since 2006 that raises money for wounded troops, a press release from the team announced. Since its inception, Sticks for Soldiers has raised about $155,000.
Saturdays event at Staples Stadium will begin at 3:30 p.m. with an introduction by Capt. Rick Holahan, a Connecticut native who served in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Holahan just returned from a voluntary deployment in Afghanistan.
The Wreckers will take on Long Islands St. John the Baptist beginning at 4 p.m. Halftime activities will include Westport Police Athletic League team play, the press release said.
Tickets for the event are $5 and can be purchased at the game from the Wreckers Lacrosse Club. Hot dogs and chips for $3 a ticket will be served by Juniors Hot Dog Stand. Baked goods and T-shirts also will be available for purchase.
All money raised from the event will be donated to Sticks For Soldiers and will help provide support for severely injured servicemen.
